Understanding The Forms Of Fire Damage

The damage caused by a fire is extensive and far-reaching. In addition to the physical damage caused by the fire itself, secondary damage from heat, soot, and smoke can add to the damage, compounding the loss.

Actions To Take After A Fire

Make sure you and those around you are in a safe spot, and the fire is completely gone. Do not attempt to remove or clean any items, building materials or electronics.

In the restoration business, time is key to getting your property restored. When a fire hits your property, you have three forms of damage; water, soot and smoke. With any water damage situation, you only have 24 hours before mold and secondary damage starts to occur. The quicker you give us a call, the faster we can start the mitigation process.

At Kelley Klean, we equip our technicians with the right tools to identify even the water that has migrated beyond what is obvious to the naked eye. We closely and carefully follow the path of water flow and try to identify the actual damage due to water ingress. We also assess the secondary damage to the property due to water leakage.

Whenever possible, unlock windows and doors in the building to air it out.

As soon as your property is available and deemed safe, inventory your belongings in the affected locations as best as you can. Create copies of that list if necessary, and be sure to submit it to your insurance company.

If applicable, clear the refrigerator or the freezer and leave it open. It is advisable to disconnect the refrigerator or the freezer, unload it, and leave it open to allow it to air out in case the electrical system in the building was destroyed because of the fire. By doing this, you prevent food from spoiling.

Do not attempt cleaning until the situation on your property is considered risk-free. Allow the experts to deal with the affected areas of your property first since you could be dispersing more hazardous particulates and thus causing more damage.

As the affected areas dry, we will slowly take equipment out until drying is complete. Depending on the severity of the project this could take as little as three days.

There are possibilities of an unnoticed short circuit in the device and/or appliance involved. Leave it to the professionals to deem the environment safe and hazard-free.
